Dating Book Buzz

There’s a dating book on the market. Well, more like an un-dating book. A former Oprah Winfrey producer and an advertising copywriter wrote Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won’t Be Dating Or Having Sex. Whew…only 311? The whole idea is built around calling out the most obvious dating offenses. It has that gleeful, tell-it-like-it-is tone that makes people laugh before they even finish the first page. At the same time, it also pokes at a very familiar frustration.

What Not To Wear

Some of these 311 things include: Guys who wear sunglasses indoors, Guys who wear speedos, Guys who wear walking shoes with knee socks, Guys with mullets, Guys who order girly drinks, Guys who play air guitar. The book is broken down into three parts: what not to wear, what not to say, and what not to do. It is easy to laugh at those details because they are so visible. Most people can picture exactly the kind of guy being described. That is part of why the list lands so well.

Laughing At Flaws

I read an excerpt and found myself laughing and agreeing. Most women have been on dates with men who have no clue about how they present themselves, including the guys who announce that they have to take a dump in the middle of the date. As much as I’d like to cheer this book on, I feel like I’m in 6th grade and we’re laughing at the new geeky kid in class. That kind of mockery may feel good, but it does not go very far. It is funny, but it is also a little too easy.

Looking At Ourselves

The game of dating is not easy, and none of us is perfect. If we approach a date looking at all of the things the other person is doing wrong, are we really making progress toward finding the right person? I can ask a guy to cut off his mullet, but I can’t make a guy feel more compassion or want to commit. What about us women? I plan to pick up a copy, but I would not use it to explain why dating sucks. There are good men out there—you just have to get past the hair plugs.
